“In four movements, using GW Septimus Piesse’s Odophone system of musical notes mapped to scents, I composed a series of slowly mutating unison tones and chords. Strictly using harmonic intervals with qualities of unfolding duration, microtonal shimmering, and overtones, the composite sound of the choir evokes a weather system, the atmosphere always in flux, as a series of released sounds and scents diffuse through our local field of perception. In this way, the music was composed not to simply accompany the scents, or even dictate the scents, but to place them both in an interdependent dialogue with the sensations of the audience, in a shared room at a particular moment.” -Preston Swirnoff, composer
